The Office of the Attorney General, Bureau of Medi-Cal Fraud
and Elder Abuse (BMFEA) and Crime and Violence Prevention Center
(CVPC) joined with the AARP in releasing a comprehensive consumer
guide to help Californians protect elderly relatives and friends.
The booklet, "A
Citizen's Guide to Preventing and Reporting Elder Abuse," provides helpful hints on how to
detect the most common warning signs of physical, emotional and
financial elder abuse and neglect in long-term care facilities.
The 36-page prevention guide offers tips on how to avoid becoming
a victim and contains a list of valuable Web sites and other
resources for additional advice and information.

California Department of Consumer Affairs -- Look Up the License
of a Doctor, Dentist, Nurse or Other Health Care Professional
The California Department of Consumer Affairs is a one-stop
shop for Californians looking to perform a license "checkup"
on a doctor, dentist, nurse or scores of other health care
professionals.
The department and its affiliated boards and bureaus license
more than 800,000 health care professionals in more than 35
fields. To give your health care provider a license checkup,

County Welfare Director's Association of California
The County Welfare Director's Association of California
(CWDA) is a nonprofit association representing human service
directors from each of California's 58 counties. The association's
mission is to promote a human services system that encourages
self-sufficiency of families and communities, and protects
vulnerable children and adults from abuse and neglect. Its
Web Site contains links to county human services agencies,
state and federal government agencies and other resources.

Hearing Aid Dispensers Bureau
The Department of Consumer Affairs' Hearing Aid Dispensers
Bureau can help seniors find a licensed dispenser and provides
consumer tips on purchasing hearing aids, hearing loss symptoms,
understanding audiograms, warranties, and online or mail-order
purchase of hearing aids.

National Center on Elder Abuse
The National Center on Elder Abuse (NCEA), funded by the U.S.
Administration on Aging, is a gateway to resources on elder
abuse, neglect, and exploitation. The center's Web
site contains a comprehensive list of toll-free numbers for
reporting domestic and institutional elder abuse and an information
clearinghouse.

National Committee for the Prevention of Elder Abuse
The National Committee for the Prevention of Elder Abuse (NCPEA)
is an association of researchers, practitioners, educators
and advocates dedicated to protecting the safety, security
and dignity of America's most vulnerable citizens.
It is one of six partners that make up the National Center
on Elder Abuse, which is funded by Congress to serve as the
nation's clearinghouse on information on abuse and
neglect. The committee's purpose is to achieve a greater
understanding of abuse and provide direction and leadership
to prevent it. Its Web site includes information on financial
abuse, physical abuse, sexual abuse, domestic abuse, psychological
